Medoc, Bordeaux
The Medoc is the large, northern part of the left bank area of Bordeaux known the Medoc and Graves. Located within the Medoc region is the Haut-Medoc and within this are the six smaller communes of St-Estephe, Pauillac, St-Julien, Listrac, Moulis and Margaux.
The Medoc region is home to all but one of the Grand Cru Classe wines of the 1855 classification and all of the Cru Bourgeois wines. Wines that are labelled as Medoc will often have come from vineyards located at the northern end of this region to the north and north-west of St-Estephe.
Only red wine is produced within the Medoc appelation with the most widely planted grape variety being Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere.
Wines labelled as Medoc are considered to be of a higher quality to wines labelled as Bordeaux or Bordeaux Superiore as the land, soils and vineyards with the Medoc are of a higher quality. Wines labelled as Bordeaux and Bordeaux Superiore can come from vineyards located anywhere within the entire Bordeaux region.
We stock many wines that have come from the Medoc area but of those labelled as Medoc wines we currently stock three. Chateau Les Moines 2008 and is a soft wine with a few years of maturity showing some of the tobacco and spice flavours only found with bottle age.
Chateau Argentyre is a Cru Bourgeois wine noted particularly for is dense concentration and defined black current fruit and oak. A great wine that will develop for many years.
Of particular note is Chateau La Tour de By, the Medoc's most northern Chateau whose vines lie at the highest altitude in the whole of the Medoc. The 'By' area of the Medoc is a plateau that runs from north of Pauillac to above St-Estephe and is famed for producing grapes that are particularly prized for their concentration and quality.
