Seifried Estate

Seifried Estate image Hermann Seifried, an Austrian orchard-raised winemaker, came to New Zealand in 1971, where he fell for Agnes –a spirited kiwi from a Southland sheep farm. Driven by a dream, the couple became pioneers in the South Island’s wine industry. They purchased land in the Moutere Valley, where they planted the region’s first vineyard in 1973, experimenting with European varieties in the untested climate. In 1976, Hermann and Agnes produced their first vintage, featuring five distinct varietal wines. In those early years wine sales were entirely through the tiny cellar door at the front of the winery and via mail-order to curious friends and family.
