A Grand Cru Classe Chateau from Pessac-Leognan, in Northern Graves, in a classic vintage which is starting to shine, especially in this region. This highly regarded wine is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc with plenty of oak.
Tasting Note:
With an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot the nose is open and giving with generous red and black berry fruits along side toasted vanilla and coconut oak. The palate is soft and rounded with fruit and oak but the tannins are still firm giving great structure and balance. Drinking now but will develop and integrate harmoniously over the coming years developing further complexity.
Producer Description
Chateau Olivier is a 55 hectare Grand Cru Classe estate in Pessac-Leognan classified under the classification of Graves in 1953. Chateau Olivier has been owned and run by the Bethmann family since the 19th century and seen considerable investment in recent years. Chateau Olivier is blessed with a unique terroir in Pessac-Leognan boasting sites that are equally outstanding for both red and white wines producing exceptional examples of both.
The origins of Château Olivier date back to the Middle Ages, when there was just a keep. Over the centuries, various writers have mentioned the likely existence of a fiefdom by the name of Olivey, the only one within the lands of Leognum. During the hundred years war, the ‘Black Prince’, Edward of Woodstock, son of King Edward III of England, loved hunting in this vast oak forest. Legend also has it that’s Bertrand Du Guesclin, commander of the French army, eschewed pitched battles in favour of constantly hounding the English; lived at Château Olivier during one of his campaigns in Aquitaine.
